Entrevista con D.N. Bryn

En el episodio 7.5 de nuestro podcast hablamos sobre el libro de Our Bloody Pearl del auto D.N. Bryn y mencioné que tenía una entrevista completa qué compartirles. Hoy les comparto la entrevista inédita, con sus traducciones al español.

¿Podemos saber un poco más sobre tu trasfondo?
Can we know a bit about your background?

D.N. Bryn
Soy una persona queer, neurodivergente, no binaria con demasiadas pecas, nacida y criada en San Diego, California. Pasé gran parte de mi infancia luchando con mi dislexia para leer novelas, hasta que mi biblioteca comenzó a llevar audiolibros de fácil acceso a través de Overdrive. Al ser de un lugar con un clima muy templado, me encanta estar al aire libre tanto como sea posible: hacer senderismo, trotar, nadar, escalar, montar a caballo y en motocicleta, y buscar arañas interesantes.

I am a queer, neurodivergent non-binary person with too many freckles, born and raised in San Diego, California. I spent a large amount of my childhood fighting through my dyslexia in order to read novels, until my library started carrying easily accessible audiobooks through Overdrive. Being from a very temperate climate, I love being outdoors as much as possible: hiking, jogging, swimming, bouldering, riding horses and motorcycles, and searching for cool spiders.

¿Siempre has tenido la escritura como algo que querías hacer o hacías como extra?
Have you always had writing as something you wanted to do or did on the side?

He escrito un poco aquí y allá toda mi vida (todavía tengo algunos cuadernos con fanfics de Nancy Drew de la escuela primaria), pero siempre tuve problemas para terminar las cosas, y mi trabajo completado más largo fue un cuento corto de mediana longitud. Sin embargo, cuando me estaba graduando de la universidad, decidí que tenía que al menos terminar una novela completa solo para decir que podía. ¡Tomó cuatro meses y el resultado final era ilegible! Pero saber que podía hacerlo me motivó a seguir practicando, y escribí Our Bloody Pearl ocho meses después. En los cuatro (y medio) años transcurridos desde entonces, he completado siete novelas más y dos novelas cortas. Algún día me gustaría escribir ficción como un trabajo de tiempo completo.

I’ve done a bit of writing here and there my whole life—I still have a few notebooks with Nancy Drew fanfics in them from elementary school—but I always struggled with finishing things, and my longest completed work was a mid-length short story. As I was graduating collage though, I decided I had to at least finish one full length novel just to say that I could. It took four month and was unreadable at the end! But knowing I could do it motivated me to keep practicing, and I wrote Our Bloody Pearl eight months later. In the four (and a half) years since then, I’ve completed seven more novels and two novellas. I’d like to write fiction as a full time job someday.

¿Cuáles son tus inspiraciones para los personajes principales?
What are your inspirations for the main characters?

¡No tengo! Mis personajes son cosas curiosas; No puedo planear hacerlos de cierta manera, solo debo escribir y ver cómo se desarrollan por sí mismos.

I don’t have any! My characters are funny things; I can’t set out to make any of them a certain way, I just have to write and see how they develop on their own.

Hay una relación muy peculiar entre la historia de este libro y la tecnología ¿Es este un elemento Steampunk?
There is a very peculiar relationship with this book’s story and technology. Is this a steampunk element?

¡Sí lo hay! No tenía la intención de que estuviera ahí al principio, pero me gusta cómo se desarrolló conforme fui avanzando, así que agregué un poco más durante las etapas de edición. Sin embargo, si hubiera sabido que iba a acabar escribiendo una serie completa en el mundo de Our Bloody Pearl, definitivamente habría hecho un mejor trabajo haciendo la tecnología consistente y (al menos un poco más) realista.

There is! I didn’t intend for it in the beginning but I like how it developed as I went so I added a bit more during the editing stages. If I had known I’d end up writing an entire series in the Our Bloody Pearl world, though, I definitely would have done a much better job of making the technology consistent and (at least a tad more) realistic.

Do you have illustrations of your characters?

No he pagado por que se realice mucho arte de estos personajes en particular, pero tengo un conjunto de fan art increíble, el cual puedes encontrar en el sitio de These Treacherous Tides.

I haven’t commissioned much art of these particular characters, but I do have a bundle of amazing fan art, which you can find on the These Treacherous Tides website.

¿Tienes planeado traducir tu libro a otros idiomas?
Do you plan on having your book translated to other languages?

D.N. Bryn
Me encantaría traducir Our Bloody Pearl (y los libros futuros de la serie), así como mandar a hacer el audiolibro en inglés, para que pueda llegar a tantos lectores como sea posible. Pero estas cosas cuestan bastante dinero de entrada, y no estoy todavía en un lugar en mi carrera en el que me sea posible aún. Espero que conforme crezca la serie, y se construya una base más grande de fans, esta se vuelva una meta más realista.

I would love to translate Our Bloody Pearl (and the future books in the series) as well as get an English audiobook made, so it can reach as many readers as possible. These things can cost quite a bit of money upfront though, and I’m not at a place in my career were that’s possible yet. Hopefully as the series grows and builds a larger fan base it will become a more realistic goal.
